Eight miles east of the Georgian City of Bath, Corsham is a beautiful, historic town with its own stately home, Corsham Court, in the town centre. Furnished by Robert Adam and Thomas Chippendale, with parks landscaped by Capability Brown and Humphry Repton, the house is open to the public and famed for its collection of peacocks. Corsham was once a centre for the wool industry and the source for Bath stone. In World War II and the subsequent Cold War, Corsham became a major centre for the Ministry of Defence, which had numerous establishments in the old quarry tunnels. Corsham was also the inspiration for Charles Dickens' novel The Pickwick Papers, taken from the name of a local farm, Pickwick Lodge.
