The county of Wiltshire

Known as "The gateway to the West Country", Wiltshire is bordered by Somerset, Dorset and Hampshire, as well as Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire. The rolling landscapes with their signature 'white horses', the medieval city of Salisbury with one of the finest cathedrals in Europe, the beautifully restored Kennet and Avon Canal, the magnificence of Longleat, the Saxon town of Bradford-upon-Avon and the Cotswold Water Park offer untold treasures to be discovered. Wiltshire, which is still primarily a rural county, featuring huge windswept treeless areas of chalk downland, much of which is sown to cereals, covers an area of 3,479 square kilometres and has a population of over half a million. Madonna owns an estate in Wiltshire, and it has become a fashionable county for pop and rock stars to set up home. It is also home to the army, who have been stationed in Wiltshire for over 100 years. Thousands of people relocate every year and buy property in Wiltshire, mainly because of the slower pace of life, beautiful surroundings, extensive transport links and strong economy.

Historical information

Much of what is now known as the county of Wiltshire was once part of the powerful Anglo Saxon Kingdom of Wessex, yet the history of the region can be traced back much further than this. Wiltshire has perhaps the highest percentage of prehistoric sites of significant interest and Megalithic icons anywhere in the UK. The most famous examples are the instantly recognisable Stonehenge and the equally impressive Avebury Stone Circle. Europe's largest man-made prehistoric mound, Silbury Hill, and Britain's largest burial chamber - the West Kennet Long Barrow are also close by. In the summer months, crop circles adorn the fields surrounding this enigmatic area. The county is rich in such mysterious sites, suggesting it was actively populated thousands of years BC. In later times, Wiltshire's prosperity grew from the wool and textile trades and its useful location on the Old Bath Road from London to Bath helped trade enormously. The Old Bath Road has been superseded by the M4 motorway.

Much is take up by medium sized estates, protecting the environment and maintaining a way of life that is attractive to lovers of the countryside. Numerous and excellent prep schools are within easy reach, and communities thrive in attractive villages and small towns alike.

Wiltshire's key county town of Trowbridge (which is the third largest town in Wiltshire, after Salisbury and Chippenham) is a property hotspot. The increase in housing, as well as the growth of the business park has made Trowbridge an ideal place to be located, with well known companies such as Virgin Mobile having settled here. Other major employers in the town include Wiltshire County Council, Airsprung and Pork Farm Bowyers. Trowbridge is a thriving retail centre with two shopping centres - the Shires Shopping Centre and Castle Place, as well as two out of town retail warehouse parks. The town also has over twenty cafés and restaurants, excellent rail links, a large park, a museum and a castle. People searching for houses for sale in Trowbridge should expect to pay £224k+ for a modern four bedroom property. Another of Wiltshire's property hotspots is Swindon. Local residents consider this town, with its excellent employment opportunities, fast transport links into London, good night life and entertainment, a great place to live. Major local employers include Honda, Zurich Insurance, Intel, Nationwide Building Society and W H Smith.
