Knottingley is in the lower Aire Valley and is an industrial town of about 17,000 residents. It lies at the heart of some of the most beautiful countryside in England, including areas of outstanding natural beauty in a county that is steeped in history. Industry and commerce are attracted to Knottingley because of its proximity to the A1(M), the M62 and the A645. Of course, long before the roads were built, the canal and railway networks supported the textile and coalmining industries and coal is still mined at neighbouring Kellingley Colliery. Knottingley town centre is divided in two by the Knottingley to Goole railway line which carries coal to the power stations at Drax, Eggborough and Ferrybridge, a village due west of Knottingley.
