Stowmarket is a market town just off the A14, midway between Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich. It has a population of 16,000 and lies on the River Gipping and its tributary, the River Rat. In the 18th century the River Gipping was made navigable between Stowmarket and Ipswich by a series of locks. Today, Stowmarket is a quintessential English town surrounded by some of Suffolk's most picturesque villages and countryside.
