Property, Houses and Flats for Sale in Southwold, Suffolk

Southwold is on the Suffolk coast midway between Lowestoft and Aldeburgh. Picture postcard pretty, it was once an important fishing port, but over the centuries a bar of shingle built up across the mouth of the River Blyth. In 1659 much of Southwold was destroyed by fire which also damaged the 12th century Church of St Edmund. But the fire created a number of open spaces within the town which have never been built on, and the limits on out-of-town building, owing to the surrounding marshes, have helped to ensure that Southwold retains its wonderful character.

Property for sale in Southwold is a good mix of old and new, such as two and three-bedroom Victorian terraced cottages, detached bungalows, and modern terraced and semi-detached houses. If you require four or more bedrooms, estate agents in Southwold represent modern detached, family-sized houses with integral garages; gracious Victorian and Edwardian townhouses; and a few substantial detached houses set within mature gardens.

Southwold lighthouse was constructed in 1887 and is a proud landmark in the town centre. The beach is a combination of sand and shingle and is backed by two rows of brightly painted beach huts. Next to Southwold Pier, which was built in 1900, is a model boat pond, and during spring and summer mini regattas are held. The Electric Picture Palace cinema opened in 2002, in honour of the original cinema that stood nearby. The River Blyth can be crossed via a footbridge close to The Harbour Inn and Southwold Sailing Club. There are plenty of tearooms, pubs, and restaurants in Southwold and local schools include Reydon Primary, St George's co-educational independent prep, and Saint Felix, an independent secondary school for girls.
