Leiston is a town in east Suffolk with many fine Victorian buildings, 4 miles north of Aldeburgh and 3 miles from the coast and Sizewell Nuclear Power Stations. It was a manufacturing town in the 19th and 20th centuries producing tractors and a variety of metal products, including war munitions. The works are now closed and replaced with a large museum displaying the history of the factory, its vehicles and products. A mile north-west of Leiston is the RAF airbase that was used by the 357th US Fight Group during WWII. Chuck Yeager, the famous fighter pilot who later broke the sound barrier, flew from Leiston and a memorial service and flying display is held at the end of May each year. Leiston is also famous for Summerhill School, an independent boarding school where children are not required to attend classes.
