Bungay is about five miles west of Beccles, lying in a loop of the River Waveney on the Suffolk/Norfolk border. It is a very pretty market town in the Broads National Park with many historic buildings including the ruins of Bigod's Castle, the 17th century Butter Cross, where a market is held every Thursday, and the early 19th century Fisher Theatre. The name 'Bungay' derives from 'Bunincga-haye' i.e. land belonging to the tribe of Bonna, who was a Saxon chieftain. Protected by the River Waveney and the marshes, the site was in a good defensive position to attract settlers.
If you are looking for property for sale in Bungay and require two or three bedrooms, you have a choice of delightful Victorian terraced cottages of which some are double-fronted and Grade II listed; or modern, semi-detached houses and various styles of bungalow. Estate agents in Bungay also represent family-sized houses with four or five bedrooms and integral garages; gracious Georgian townhouses; converted farm buildings in wonderful rural settings; and a few substantial detached houses set within mature gardens.
