Aldeburgh or 'alde burgh' means old fort although the fort and much of the Tudor town has been lost to the sea. In the 16th century, Aldeburgh had a flourishing ship-building industry and Sir Francis Drake's ships: the Greyhound and the Pelican, later renamed the Golden Hind, were both built in Aldeburgh. Unfortunately, the River Alde silted up and the town went into decline. Aldeburgh survived as a fishing village until the 19th century, when it became a popular seaside resort.
