Aldeburgh or 'alde burgh' means old fort although the fort and much of the Tudor town has been lost to the sea. In the 16th century, Aldeburgh had a flourishing ship-building industry and Sir Francis Drake's ships: the Greyhound and the Pelican, later renamed the Golden Hind, were both built in Aldeburgh. Unfortunately, the River Alde silted up and the town went into decline. Aldeburgh survived as a fishing village until the 19th century, when it became a popular seaside resort. Much of its distinctive architecture comes from this time and the River Alde is now home to a flourishing yacht club.
One of the most remarkable buildings in Aldeburgh is the Moot Hall, a timber-framed building that has been used for council meetings for over 400 years. Outside of Aldeburgh, the Snape Maltings, built in the 19th century for malting barley for beer, is the venue for the world-famous Aldeburgh music festival. Almost equally famous and sometimes more welcome, is Celia Cooney's fish 'n' chip shop in the centre of Aldeburgh, described by The Times as " possibly the finest fish 'n' chips on the east coast". Aldeburgh is also great for swimmers and the beach was awarded the Blue flag in 2005.
