Staffordshire is a beautiful rural county of scenic contrast, stretching from the gritstone hills on the edge of the Peak District National Park, to the flood plains of the river Trent, and the edge of the West Midlands conurbation. Staffordshire is the home of some of the finest pottery in the world, with the area around Stoke-on-Trent known as 'The Potteries'. The county has a number of interesting market towns including Leek, Uttoxeter, the cathedral town of Lichfield, the brewing town of Burton-on-Trent, and a variety of rural settlements that provide homes for a quarter of Staffordshire's population. The county town of Stafford, a modern town with a rich history, is home to a host of amenities and attractions, including the Ancient High House – the largest timber-framed townhouse in England. Staffordshire has a population of just over 1m and covers an area of approximately 1000 square miles.

A brief history

Historically, Staffordshire was divided into the five hundreds of Cuttlestone, Offlow, Pirehill, Seisdon and Totmonslow. The county probably came into being after the year 913, which is when Stafford - the strategic military fording-point for an army to cross the Trent - became a secure fortified stronghold and the new capital of Mercia under Queen Ethelfaed. The county symbol, the Staffordshire Knot, can be seen on an Anglian stone cross dating from around the year 805, and the cross still stands in Stoke churchyard. The origin of the name of the county, which was first recorded in 1016 as 'Staeffordscir' comes from the Old English 'ford by the landing place'. Staffordshire is also famous for the breed of dog called the 'Staffordshire Bull Terrier', which emerged around the 17th century from crosses between Bulldogs and terriers. The resulting offspring became known as the Bull and Terrier, or Pit Dog. They came about when Bull and Bear baiting was outlawed in the 1830's and an interest in dog fighting increased.
