Sheffield is a vibrant, energetic and expanding city with a thriving economy.
Living in Sheffield
Sheffield is in South Yorkshire, in the north of England, close to Leeds, Manchester and [[Nottingham]. More than one third of the city is within the Peak National Park, at the southern end of the Pennine Hills.
Sheffield is England's fourth-largest city, with a wealth of facilities you would expect to find in a major city - yet it's compact, friendly and accessible. It is also the greenest city in England, with 150 woodlands and 50 public parks.
The city has a prosperous economy and a relatively low cost of living, and is one of the UKs safest cities. The area is bursting with culture and entertainment, including award-winning theatres, museums and galleries.
Sheffield is considered to be a desirable place to live, with over 44 per cent of Sheffield residents living within a five-minute walk of a wood, and half the city's population within 15 minutes of open countryside.
Choose from city living within the bustling yet compact city centre, or move out to the leafy, more tranquil suburbs that lie just a couple of miles from the city centre.
Alternatively, there's always country village life in the Peak District, which is still an easy commute for those working in the city. The average travel to work time is just 23 minutes.
Whichever you choose, distances are short, so there's easy access to the open countryside of the Peak National Park or to the nightlife and entertainment in and around the city centre.
Housing remains competitively priced locally, and the general cost of living is one of the lowest in the UK, at just 90 per cent of national average.
Transport
Sheffield's motorway link is the M1, junctions 33 and 34. For access to the city it is recommended motorists leave at junction 33 and proceed into the city centre via the Parkway (A630).
Regular inter-city services operate between Sheffield and other main line towns and cities. London is two-and-a-half hours away by train; Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham one hour and Edinburgh four hours.
Sheffield has an integrated transport system with plenty of trams and buses, which are a popular and cheap way to travel around the city. Although buses and trams are frequent, many people also choose to walk and cycle.
Manchester, Leeds/Bradford and Doncaster Robin Hood airports are all approximately one hour from Sheffield.
Further information on the airport can be found at: www.robinhoodairport.com, www.lbia.co.uk, www.manchesterairport.co.uk
History and culture
Known for its steel, engineering and cutlery, Sheffield is well known worldwide as the home of quality manufacturing. Today, the story of its rich heritage is told in many of the citys museums and galleries.
The Peak Districts spectacular scenery, wildlife, reservoirs and stone-built market towns are popular with residents and visitors. The Sheffield leg of the Trans Pennine Trail is popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders.
There are great opportunities for outdoor activities such as walking, climbing, caving, mountain biking and camping, and an abundance of good pubs and restaurants to rest and recover in.
Sheffield has a thriving cultural community, with some of the best galleries in the north of England, including a collection of 19th and 20th century art at the Graves Art Gallery.
