Nestling in the Mendip Hills, Wells is a small cathedral city that derives its name from three wells dedicated to Saint Andrew for the alleged curative powers of the water. One of the wells is in Market Place and the other two are within the grounds of the Bishop's Palace and Wells’ magnificent cathedral. During the English Civil War, Parliamentarian troops stabled their horses in the cathedral and damaged much of the ornate sculpture by using it for firing practice. Today, Wells is a charming and peaceful city with modern amenities and interesting shops and restaurants.
