Chard is the most southerly town in Somerset, one mile from the Devon border and on a slope of hills 500ft above sea level. Chard was founded in 495 AD and the name derives from Cerdre which means 'The Royal house of Cerdic', who was the first King of the West Saxons. Chard was rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1578 and buildings in Fore Street date from that time.
