Castle Cary is a pretty, honey coloured market town on the River Cary, five miles north-west of Wincanton and eight miles south of Shepton Mallet. The village is built of 'Ham' stone from nearby quarries, which gives the town's buildings their warm golden colour. Cloth has been produced commercially in Castle Cary since the 14th century and continues today with John Boyd Textiles, the only horsehair weaving factory in the UK.
