The medieval town of Axbridge nestles by the south-western slopes of the Mendip Hills overlooking the Cheddar Reservoir near the River Axe. An important wool-producer in the middle ages, Axbridge was granted a Royal Charter in 1202, permitting the town to hold markets, fairs and become a Royal Borough with its own minted coins.
