Watlington is the smallest market town in England and has a population of around 3,000. Located in the Chiltern Hills between Oxford and Henley-on-Thames, it is about three miles from Junction 6 of the M40. Several of the town's buildings date from the 17th century, although their facades are often 18th or 19th. A fascinating white mark 270 feet tall and 36 feet wide lies above the town, carved into the chalk hill. When approaching the north-west of Watlington, the 12th century Church of St Leonard appears to have a spire. In 1764, a local squire felt that the Norman church, when viewed from his home, would look more impressive with the added "spire".
If you are looking for houses for sale in Watlington you will find an eclectic mix of old and new. There are delightful brick-built cottages offering two bedrooms, with slate or thatched roofs; and terraced and semi-detached houses offering three bedrooms in a variety of styles and periods. If you require four or five bedrooms, estate agents in Watlington offer a choice of picturesque, thatched cottages, often Grade II listed; detached, architect designed houses built in the 19th and 20th centuries; and impressive mansions in truly idyllic surroundings.
