Sutton-in-Ashfield is about 600 feet above sea level, 3½ miles south-west of Mansfield and has a population of around 45,000. It was in 1874 that coal mining came to Sutton-in-Ashfield, with the sinking of two shafts. Miners and their families arrived from Brierley Hill in Staffordshire and the local village of Stanton Hill was purpose-built to accommodate them. The colliery closed in 1989 and it is now Brierley Forest Country Park, covering 250 green and wooded acres that offer wonderful views of the Nottinghamshire countryside.
