Churned up clay coloured the water of the River Idle red where it was forded by livestock, hence the original name of Redforde. In 1246, Henry III granted Retford its first Charter to hold a fair and in 1275 Edward I granted the right to hold a market. Prosperity came in 1766 when the Great North Road was diverted to run through the town. Trade was boosted again with the opening of the Cheterfield Canal, but it was the arrival of the London to York railway in 1849 which brought real wealth to the town. Today, Retford is a peaceful and pretty market town with a beautiful French-inspired Victorian Town Hall, and St Swithun's Church famous for its delightful peal of ten bells.
