Newark is situated on the River Trent and the River Devon, where the Great North Road intersects with the Fosse Way Roman road. The town's official name is Newark-on-Trent and it originally developed around Newark Castle which now lies in ruins thanks to Oliver Cromwell and his Roundheads. Fortunately, the town's large marketplace was spared such vandalism and is lined with beautiful historic buildings. The current population in Newark and its suburb of Balderton is about 40,000 and the residents benefit from excellent road and rail links.
If you are looking for property for sale in Newark there is a tremendous choice of modern, post-war, Edwardian, and Victorian terraced and semi-detached houses and cottages; new-build townhouses, detached bungalows, and period and modern detached houses often with integral garages. Estate agents in Newark also represent substantial houses set within wonderful rural locations, barn conversions and other converted farm buildings, and a variety of impressive period properties including Georgian and Regency houses, usually Grade II listed.
For details of flats for sale in Newark, which are in a mix of converted period properties, purpose-built post-war blocks and new-build apartment houses; and for all cottages and houses currently on the market, please contact Newark estate agents.
Amenities for Newark properties
Newark withstood three sieges by Parliamentarians in the Civil War and the town retains much of that strength of character in its cobbled market square and historic buildings, notably the ruins of Newark's majestic 12th century castle, the mid 17th century Governor's House, the palatial Town Hall, Ye Olde White Hart Inn now occupied by Nottingham Building Society, the 13th century St Mary Magdalene Church with a spire of 230 feet, the Tudor bakery now the Old Bakery Tea Rooms, and the 17th century King Charles Coffee House. For school-age children there are twelve primary schools in the Newark area, two secondary schools and, for further education, Newark & Sherwood College.
Transport in Newark-on-Trent
The railway station in Newark North Gate is served by the East Coast Main Line providing services to London and Edinburgh and the station in Newark Castle lies on the Nottingham - Lincoln line.
