Dramatic coastal seascapes, picturesque towns and villages and sublime city living - Northumberland has much to offer.

Living in Northumberland

Northumberland has something for everyone, whether you're looking for a busy market town environment or a more relaxing and rural take on life. You will find some of the UK's most beautiful coastline and countryside in Northumberland, and the transport, shopping and leisure facilities in the area are second to none.

Quality of life surveys show that the region has a great deal to offer with excellent employment, housing, education and leisure opportunities.

It won't surprise those people already living in the region that Alnwick is considered to offer the best quality of life in the whole of the UK, according to a recent survey conducted by a leading magazine. Alnwick is just one of many towns in Northumberland to offer quality affordable housing, real community spirit and excellent amenities.

The region provides everything from starter homes, cottages and flats at some of the best prices in the UK, to million-pound properties including penthouse apartments, large detached homes, small-holdings and converted stately homes.

If you prefer city living then Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead are within easy commuting distance.

From the Haymarket in the north to the Quayside in the south, Newcastle's city centre has been transformed. Venerable old properties have been restored, whilst many eyesores have been removed to make way for innovative new buildings.

Imaginative property conversions have turned crumbling Victorian factories and 1960s office blocks into fabulous modern apartments, whilst the rejuvenated 'Grainger Town' has regained its rightful reputation as a jewel of Georgian architecture.

Transport

By road, Northumberland is accessible from Scotland and the south via the A1 London to Edinburgh highway running the length of the county.

Newcastle Airport can be reached in less than one hour from most destinations in Northumberland and is easily accessible. The airport handles flights from the UK and a wide range of European destinations.

Northumberland is about three and a half hours from London King's Cross station. Services to and within Northumberland are operated by National Express East Coast, Cross Country Trains and Northern Rail.

History and culture

Northumberland's cultural heritage has been shaped by Roman occupation and tribal conflicts; by roving holy men and gritty pioneers. It features names such as the Emperor Hadrian, King Arthur, St Cuthbert and St Bede.

Hadrian's Wall is one of Northumberland's true icons and England's largest World Heritage Site, and is popular with walkers and cyclists. Picturesque towns and villages such as Hexham and Haltwhistle are scattered throughout the countryside surrounding the wall.
