Northallerton is the County town and administrative centre of North Yorkshire. It owes its origins, growth and importance to its position in the centre of the Vale of York, on the main communications route between the south and the north, and as the market nucleus for a large rural area. Local estate agents in Northallerton say the town has a feeling of importance and elegance which make it different to the other market towns of North Yorkshire. It's also quite different because it hasn't got a market square, but instead there is a fine high street with old coaching houses. Restaurants include traditional Fish and Chips, Indian, Chinese, and pizza takeaways as well as cafés, tea rooms, a bistro and traditional pubs.
