Thetford is a market town in the Breckland area of Norfolk on the A11 between London and Norwich. To the north-west of town is Thetford Forest, an area of heathland planted with pine trees during the First World War. Surrounded by farmland and villages, the forest is home to hares, rabbits, and deer, and offers a wonderful resource for walkers, riders and naturalists. Within the forest is Grimes Graves, a large Neolithic flint mining complex which was worked from 3000 BC until 1900 BC when the use of bronze tools replaced flint.
Known as the place where "Londoners live" following the mass exodus after World War II, Thetford has in the last few years welcomed a fresh influx of new residents, mostly from Portugal. In response, the town centre has become more vibrant and Portuguese cafés, restaurants, delicatessens and a bar have opened up.
