Norwich Market, established by the Normans between 1071 and 1074, is the largest six days a week open air market in England. In 1814, Colman's Mustard was founded in Norwich and continues to operate from its factory at Carrow. Throughout the 1980s and '90s Norwich's economy changed from chiefly industrial to a service-based industry.

Norwich is considered to have a wealth of historical architecture with the medieval period represented by the 11th century Norwich Cathedral and the 12th century Norwich castle, which is now a museum. During the Middle Ages, 57 churches stood within the city wall and 31 still exist today. The 18th century saw many fine buildings constructed including the Assembly Rooms, the Octagon Chapel, and St Helen's House. In the 19th century, Norwich grew considerably in size and continued to grow throughout the 20th century, despite heavy bombing in the Second World War destroying some historic buildings.

Castle shopping mall presents an ingenious solution to the problem of sensitively creating new retail space in an historic city-centre environment, i.e. the building is largely buried underground in the side of a hill. The new Chapelfield shopping mall has been built on the site where the Caley's chocolate factory once stood. It features a new three-floor flagship House of Fraser department store. Transport in Norwich

The A47 connects Norwich to Peterborough via King's Lynn; the A140 connects Norwich to the port of Ipswich; and the A11 connects Norwich to Cambridge and the M11 motorway to London.

The railway station in Norwich links to the rest of the country via stations in Peterborough and London's Liverpool Street. Local lines also run to Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft and Sheringham.

Norwich International Airport is served by Fly Be, Air South West, Eastern Airways, and Bristow Helicopters, and a strong holiday charter flight business.

The River Yare is navigable from the sea at Great Yarmouth all the way to Trowse, south of the city. From there the River Wensum is navigable right into Norwich.
