Diss lies in the beautiful valley of the River Waveney, around one of the deepest natural lakes in the country. The town has some fine Mediaeval, Georgian and Edwardian buildings, including the 14th century Church of St. Mary and the remarkable 16th century Dolphin House. In 1871, workmen were removing the ground floor bricks of a neighbouring house and discovered an earthen vessel containing three hundred silver coins and two gold nobles. It just goes to prove, there's always been money in property!
Diss has a wide selection of pubs and several good restaurants, with Indian food especially popular. There are three supermarkets, a garden centre, DIY store, and numerous independent shops and services. To the south-west of Diss town centre is Fair Green, which was granted a Royal Charter in 1185 for activities such as bull baiting and cock fighting. The historic Green is now the location for travelling fairs and circuses. Diss has its own primary and secondary schools, an award-winning museum, and a zoo near the village of Banham.
The railway station in Diss offers a good service to London Liverpool Street in 1hr 40mins and to Norwich in 22mins. Plenty of buses serve the town and there are cross-country routes to Norwich, Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds, Stowmarket and Great Yarmouth.
