The present town of Cromer was originally called Shipden-juxta-Felbrigg and, to the north-east, was the village of Shipden-juxta-mere which is now under the sea. Thanks to the arrival of the railway in 1877, Cromer became a celebrated resort and welcomed illustrious visitors including the future King Edward VII, who played golf there. The Royal Cromer Golf Club still hosts the Prince of Wales Cup. In 1883, Clement Scott, a journalist, visited Cromer and named the stretch of coastline, 'Poppyland', referring to the numerous poppies which still grow along the country lanes.

The railway station in Cromer offers a limited service to Norwich with a journey time of 45mins. Trains from Norwich provide services to stations in Ipswich, Colchester and London Liverpool Street as well as numerous other destinations.
