The present town of Cromer was originally called Shipden-juxta-Felbrigg and, to the north-east, was the village of Shipden-juxta-mere which is now under the sea. Thanks to the arrival of the railway in 1877, Cromer became a celebrated resort and welcomed illustrious visitors including the future King Edward VII, who played golf there. The Royal Cromer Golf Club still hosts the Prince of Wales Cup. In 1883, Clement Scott, a journalist, visited Cromer and named the stretch of coastline, 'Poppyland', referring to the numerous poppies which still grow along the country lanes.

Houses for sale in Cromer and its neighbouring coastal and inland villages are a mixture of styles and periods and include two-bedroom bungalows and cottages; Victorian, semi-detached townhouses; and 20th century, detached houses built in rural and semi-rural locations. Flats for sale in Cromer are in purpose-built apartment houses, converted commercial premises and in large, Victorian houses, often with superb views of the sea.
