A leafy riverside residential area and the home of England Rugby.
Living in Twickenham
Most famous as the home of the England rugby ground, Twickenham is a popular, well-established residential area, right on the River Thames and close to Richmond. Twickenham became a fashionable place to escape from life at court in the eighteenth century when imposing villas began to appear along the riverfront. The arrival of the railway and opening of the bridge in the nineteenth century heralded a Twickenham property boom with major residential developments which still appeal to commuters today.
The general feel of Twickenham is relaxed and family orientated, with the majority of residents either those seeking solace from the hustle and bustle of the city, or long-time residents.
If you fancy a slice of the ‘good life’, why not spend the day exploring?
As well as nineteenth and early twentieth century housing stock, there are a wealth of 1930s semis, Georgian terraces and cottages on the borders of Marble Hill Park. There are also Victorian and Edwardian houses in central Twickenham and a collection of Georgian cottages on the triangle of roads around the Green.
Twickenham’s shopping has improved dramatically in recent years and now includes a Marks & Spencer and Laura Ashley Home. Twickenham is also close to the major shopping areas of Kingston and Richmond.
There are a number of new restaurants in Twickenham, and those prepared to travel slightly out of town head for Teddington.
Transport
There are frequent direct train services to London Waterloo, Clapham Junction, Staines, Windsor, Reading and intermediate stations. The area doesn’t benefit from a tube station, but you can join the District Line at Richmond Station, from where there are frequent buses to the centre of town and the stadium.
Twickenham is approximately 6 miles from London Heathrow and 20 miles from London City Airport.
History and culture
Whilst Twickenham is a relatively quiet suburb in the 21st century, it’s not always been that way. The area gained a mention in the Domesday Book, lived through several doses of the bubonic plague and has seen a thriving gunpowder industry. The home of English rugby, Twickenham stadium, has recently been expanded to seat 82,000. On match days the area is swamped with fans who are friendly and respectful to local residents.
Further information about the rugby stadium can be found at www.rfu.com.
