Shepherd's Bush - vibrant, ethnically diverse and close to Central London.

Living in Shepherd's Bush

Shepherd's Bush, Hammersmith and West Kensington have proved, and continue to be growing property hotspots for people who enjoy the convenience of living within easy reach of Central and West London.

The typical Shepherd's Bush property is a Victorian terrace or semi-detached house, and there are a few new build or ex-local authority homes. The area is a favourite with first-time buyers who want a period property in West London without a huge price tag.

Shepherd's Bush is sandwiched between some very expensive areas such as Notting Hill, Kensington and Chiswick, and offers good value compared to its surrounding neighbourhoods.

Your neighbours are likely to be BBC workers, music and media types, families and substantial West Indian and Middle Eastern communities.

There is a buzz in the air, a sense that the long-promised property boom could finally be about to happen. And all because of a new shopping centre at White City, in the eastern corner of Shepherd's Bush.

The Australian developers are also overhauling Shepherd's Bush Green and expect the scheme to trigger £1 billion of local regeneration, including new social and private housing. Canny investors moved in as soon as the project began in earnest, around 2000.

Transport

Shepherd's Bush is easily accessible by tube (Central and Hammersmith & City lines).

An overland train from Watford to Brighton stops at Kensington Olympia, a 10-minute walk from Shepherd's Bush.

The new tube, bus and railway stations at Westfield London will make Shepherd's Bush even better connected to the rest of London and beyond.

A comprehensive bus network runs from the Green and Uxbridge Road into Central London.

The A40 provides easy road access out of London.

History and culture

Shepherd's Bush is well known for its bustling market, which began trading in the summer of 1914, and apart from a short break during the First World War, is still running strong today. The market hosts some of the best speciality Afro-Caribbean stalls in the west.

A popular haunt for theatregoers is the Bush Theatre, established in 1972 above the Bush Pub. The theatre quickly became an internationally renowned home of new writing, and is one of the few theatres in Britain devoted exclusively to the development, production and promotion of new plays.
