Situated between Brixton and Dulwich, Herne Hill is home to Brockwell Park, which houses the magnificent Brockwell Lido. It's an open air swimming pool that also boasts many attractions such as hair braiding, body painting and yoga classes. Brockwell Park hosts the annual Lambeth Country Fair and was the site of London's Gay Pride festival for several years. Situated in another park off Burbage Road, the Herne Hill Velodrome was built in 1891 and is the only remaining cycle racing track in London. It hosted the track cycling events in the 1948 Olympic Games. It also has a football pitch in the centre, and was home to Crystal Palace Football Club from 1915 until 1918. Herne Hill is in both the London Borough of Lambeth and the London Borough of Southwark and is covered by the postcode SE24. The Second World War saw much damage to Herne Hill, particularly during the Blitz. After 1945, priority was given to repairing damaged properties and building new houses. These contrasted significantly with their neighbouring late Victorian and Edwardian properties which were often demolished or converted into flats.
