Wandsworth has a rich stock of period and contemporary housing, complemented by good local schools, shops and parks.

Living in Wandsworth

Wandsworth lies on the south bank of the River Thames, south-west of Wandsworth Bridge.

The area gave its name to the London Borough of Wandsworth which is one of the most desirable boroughs in south London and includes areas such as Putney, Southfields, Earlsfield, Tooting, Balham, Battersea and Clapham Junction.

Lying at the heart of residential Wandsworth is Southside, once the Arndale Centre but, following the spending of many millions, now an attractive shopping mall.

Southside has numerous shops and stores including a Waitrose supermarket, Mothercare and Primark, several places to eat, a multi-screen Cineworld and excellent parking.

Near Wandsworth Town railway station is an area of Wandsworth called the Tonsleys. Charming Edwardian terraced houses benefit from the shops and restaurants on Old York Road, now happily bypassed by Wandsworth’s one-way system.

Off East Hill there are numerous, substantial Victorian houses, some of which border the west side of Wandsworth Common; churches, shops and schools add to the quality of the area.

By the River Thames, where once there was a wharf, is a new development of luxury high-rise apartments, many with stunning views across the river.

Another area that has improved radically over the last few years is St John’s Hill, to the east of Trinity Road underpass. Here you will find numerous independent cafés, bars and restaurants, including the award-winning Fish Club.

Wandsworth offers quality urban living with easy access to great swathes of green such as Wandsworth Common, King George's Park, and Wandsworth Park.

Transport

Wandsworth is served by several major roads including the A3, Trinity Road and the A205 South Circular.

Wandsworth Town railway station is operated by South West Trains and offers a good regular service to Clapham Junction and London Waterloo, and to Richmond, Ascot, Bracknell and Reading.

History and culture

Between the town centre and the river, in the middle of Wandsworth's one-way system, lies the former site of Young & Co's Ram Brewery.

Traditional draught beer was produced on the site from 1581 and delivered in barrels to local pubs by drays pulled by beautiful shire horses.

In 2006, beer production on the site ceased when Young & Co merged their brewing operations with Charles Wells of Bedford. A new use for the site is in its planning stage but both the massive shire horses and the smell of hops are sorely missed by the local residents.

As mentioned above, Southside Wandsworth is an attractive shopping mall offering numerous High Street stores and services plus a Virgin Active Heath Club (www.virginactive.co.uk/VA/Content.aspx) and a Cineworld multi screen cinema (http://www.cineworld.co.uk/reservation/ChoixResa.jgi?CINEMA=33).
