Solid, quality housing stock continues to ensure Tooting's popularity with singles and families.

Living in Tooting

Tooting is a surprisingly large residential area in south London, lying west of Streatham, east of Wimbledon and south of Wandsworth Common.

St George's Hospital is a renowned teaching hospital near Tooting Broadway with an excellent Accident & Emergency unit.

Plans are underway to create 1,400 housing units on the 80-acre site, including 70 single and semi-detached houses and 175 townhouses. There will also be up to 1,150 flats of which at least 35% will be affordable housing.

Adjacent to the hospital grounds is a golf course which may be opened up to the public and converted into a park.

Between Upper Tooting and Streatham there are numerous terraces of late-Victorian villas and early Edwardian three-bedroom houses. Many of the double-fronted villas have been converted into flats in an area of London that is known for its high quality housing stock.

Tooting is culturally vibrant with numerous retail outlets, supermarkets, pubs and restaurants complemented by excellent bus and tube links.

In recent years Wandsworth Borough Council has injected a £20m improvement grant encouraging well-known chain stores to open in Tooting Broadway.

Tooting offers a variety of ways to relax including facilities for athletics on Tooting Graveney Common and tennis, soccer, horse riding and swimming on the vast green swathe of Tooting Bec Common. The area also boasts Tooting Bec Lido, the largest freshwater pool in England.

Transport

Tooting Bec and Tooting Broadway tube stations are both on the Northern Line linking directly to Morden in the south west and railway stations in Central London including Waterloo, London Bridge, Euston and King's Cross St. Pancras.

Also on the Northern Line one stop from Tooting Bec is Balham tube and train station, which provides a link to Gatwick Airport and the south coast and, north, to Watford Junction.

History and culture

The famous Lido swimming pool was dug on Tooting Bec Common in 1906 and opened for mixed bathing in 1931.It is the largest open-air swimming pool in London and still retains its original charm and popularity.

The Lido's alternating bright red, yellow and green doors of the changing cubicles make the Lido a popular location for filming. A scene from the film 'Snatch' was filmed at the pool with Brad Pitt.

Tooting Bec Lido is home to South London Swimming Club, which uses the Lido during the winter months and hosts the Cold Water Championships. Anyone for a dip?

Graveney School is in the Furzedown area of east Tooting. It is one of the finest comprehensive schools in the country and lures many families to move into the area.

Tooting has existed since pre-Saxon times with the name originating from "the dwelling of the sons of Totas".
