One of Greater London's most desirable satellite towns, Richmond is protected by the River Thames and the vast expanse of Richmond Park.
Living in Richmond
The view from Richmond Hill across Petersham Meadows and the meandering River Thames is priceless. It is complemented by shops, stores, restaurants, cinemas, theatre and transport that are all located in the heart of Richmond town centre.
Richmond lies in the County of Surrey within Greater London and offers a quality of life that is rarely found in the capital. There are plenty of leisure and sports facilities and also libraries, museums and cultural activities available in what is a truly beautiful residential town.
Period townhouses are at a premium especially those that have views across the River Thames. At the bottom of Richmond Hill, opposite the multi-screen cinema, is Richmond Bridge which leads to St Margaret's and the main route south west to Basingstoke and Southampton. Lining the river's bank are restaurants and pubs, especially popular in summer, and the town centre is within a few minutes' walk.
Several of Richmond's earliest buildings still exist and Georgian and Victorian architecture is in abundance, often listed Grade I or Grade II.
Richmond is a town for putting down roots. Once you've experienced a walk in Richmond Park, a game of golf on one of several courses, superb local shops, excellent theatre and dining, and a vibrancy that permeates the whole town, you will find that few places bear comparison.
Transport
Richmond has a railway station offering services to Willesden Junction, Stratford and Barking; to Clapham Junction and London Waterloo; and west to Reading and beyond.
Richmond tube station is a terminus on the District line and links directly with neighbouring Kew and the rest of the London Underground network.
The River Thames, Richmond Park and Old Deer Park provide natural borders for Richmond, so travelling by car and bus can feel a bit restricted. Across Richmond Bridge, St Margaret's Road joins the A316 Chertsey Road which becomes the M3 motorway at Sunbury.

History and culture
King Henry VII, the first Tudor monarch, put Richmond-upon-Thames on the map when he built a palace by the river and named it after a village on his estate in Yorkshire.
Remains of the great palace can still be seen near Richmond Green, where once jousting and archery competitions took place. The Green is a prized feature within Richmond and is guarded by magnificent townhouses that date back many hundreds of years.
At the eastern corner of Richmond Green is Richmond Theatre, built in 1899 as the Theatre Royal and Opera House. The theatre was refurbished in 1991 and is one of the most popular, exquisite, and successful theatres in the UK.
