Unjustly renowned for its riots, Brixton has much to offer, including some fine housing stock and excellent shops, markets and amenities.
Living in Brixton
Brixton has a growing reputation as one of London's most exciting urban areas complemented by innovative construction projects.
Property in Brixton includes grand Georgian and Victorian two and three-storey double-fronted villas, numerous streets of Victorian terraces and modern developments of purpose-built flats. Brixton is also home to several large social housing estates.
Complementing the variety of property is a dynamic neighbourhood full of bars, cafes, restaurants and old pubs that throb to modern dance music.
Two of London's best known music venues are located in Brixton; Carling Academy Brixton (formerly Brixton Academy) on Stockwell Road and The Fridge on Brixton Hill.
Restaurants in Brixton reflect the vibrant mix of the local community and although many are Caribbean or West African in flavour, you will also find Japanese, French and Portuguese.
At the heart of Brixton is its street market, open every day selling produce from around the world including Indian, South American, Vietnamese and especially Afro-Caribbean.
Residents in Brixton are also well-served by Sainsbury's and Tesco supermarkets, the magnificent Ritzy Cinema, and the wonderful green expanse of Brockwell Park with its Lido swimming pool, cycle track and tennis courts.
Transport
Brixton tube station is the southern terminus of the Victoria Line linking to Stockwell, Vauxhall, Pimlico and Victoria tube stations.
Neighbouring Stockwell tube station is also on the Northern Line, providing a direct link to South Wimbledon and to Central and East London.

History and culture
First recorded as Brixistane in 1067, which means 'at the stone of Brihtsige', Brixton was a wasteland until the opening of Vauxhall Bridge in 1816 when it became an elegant middleclass suburb during the reigns of George IV and Queen Victoria.
The largest single development was Angell Town laid out in the 1850s on the east side of Brixton Road. It was named after the family that owned the land.
One of London's last surviving windmills is just off Brixton Hill and was built almost two hundred years ago. Needless to say the local pub, 'The Windmill' was named after it.
Windrush Square, between Lambeth Town Hall and the Tate Library, was created to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the arrival of the Afro-Caribbean community.
In 1996 Nelson Mandela visited Brixton's Mandela Street, which is part of a modern housing development constructed in the mid 1980s. Mandela also paid a visit to Brixton Recreation Centre.
