Battersea is famous for the Art Deco splendour of Battersea Power Station, tree-lined streets and excellent transport links.

Living in Battersea

Battersea is in the London Borough of Wandsworth, one of the cheapest areas in the country to live in terms of Council Tax.

The area has a real sense of community, good transport connections, attractive Victorian family homes and two commons on its doorstep.

Years ago, young professionals moved to Battersea because they couldn’t afford Fulham. Now, the gap in prices between the two areas has closed, and Battersea is no longer a bridesmaid.

Northcote Road provides much of the area’s character. Strictly speaking it is in Battersea, but the area is often referred to as Clapham Junction because the train station is close by.

During the day you will discover Northcote Road is inhabited by young mums. At night, out come the young professionals, seeking a better class of pub or restaurant.

Belleville Road is a popular tree-lined street of Victorian terraced houses, which lies in an area known as “Between the Commons”. It’s a five-minute walk to Clapham Junction station and is on the same road as a good primary school.

The people who live on the street are mostly young families who tend to move out as their children grow up – either to the country, to Teddington or Dulwich.

Property in Battersea ranges from Victorian family houses around Lavender Hill to elegant mansion blocks overlooking Battersea Park and stylish Riverside apartments.

The parks and open spaces in Battersea are unrivalled in their scale and diversity, from the Victorian splendour of Battersea Park to popular Wandsworth Common.

Transport

By road, Albert Bridge, one of London’s most attractive bridges, links Battersea to Chelsea and the heart of London.

Clapham Junction is one of the UK’s busiest railway stations and is ideal for commuters who work in the heart of London, as both Waterloo and Victoria mainline stations are 10 minutes away.

From Clapham Junction you can also head south-east to Gatwick Airport, Brighton and Kent.

Other mainline stations in the area include Queenstown Road and Battersea Park.

The area is well served by buses, and the nearest tube stations are Sloane Square and Clapham Common.

Battersea is also home to London’s busiest heliport.

History and culture

Battersea Park was originally known as Battersea Fields, where in 1829 the Duke of Wellington fought a duel with the Earl of Winchelsea. It was mainly occupied by cabbage planters and asparagus-growers.

In recent years the park has undergone many improvements. Most recently about two thirds of the lake edges have been returned to their former Victorian splendour, hard bank edges removed and the margins and banks replanted.

With further funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Wandsworth Council intend returning the park to its former glory.

Battersea is home to the largest and most famous dogs’ home in the UK. If you are in the market to re-home a dog or cat or have lost a pet, this is the place to visit.

Worth a visit for families with young children is Battersea Park Children’s Zoo, run by a family with a passion for animals.
