Property, Houses and Flats for Sale in West Norwood, South East London

Housing in West Norwood is not as expensive as neighbouring West Dulwich and Streatham but it is of similar style and quality.

Living in West Norwood

Once part of the Great North Wood, much of West Norwood is still leafy and green, especially the woodland park of West Norwood Cemetery and the charming Norwood Park to the south.

To the north-east of West Norwood is Dulwich Wood which leads to the great green swathe of Dulwich & Sydenham Hill Golf Course. To the south-west is Streatham Common.

Norwood Road is the main local shopping street and residents are well-served by small shops including a delicatessen, fishmonger, chemist, bakers, halal butchers and charity outlets.

There is also a Co-op, a Somerfield, a B&Q and a selection of bars and restaurants.

Housing in West Norwood includes Victorian villas with up to five bedrooms, three-bedroom Edwardian terraced houses, and one and two-bedroom flats usually found in converted properties.

Houses in the roads leading off Knight's Hill are especially sought-after, as are the houses in Leigham Court Road which marks the border with Streatham.

Significant landmarks in West Norwood include St Luke's Church, one of several churches in the area, and the Old Library which was renovated by Lambeth Council in 2004.

West Norwood’s modern library is situated next to the main gate of West Norwood cemetery and lends books, DVDs, videos and CDs and offers free use of computers.

There are state primary and secondary schools in West Norwood, including a new, non-faith, secondary school, called Elmgreen. The school is based at an interim site and will move in 2009 to a new building in Elm Court Road.

Transport

History and culture

The South London Theatre is a gothic-style building that was originally a fire station, built in 1881.

Between being a fire station and a theatre, the building was a church hall and an illegal boxing venue.

Much of the building’s original character is retained and the area behind the doors where the appliances and horses were kept is now the Bell Theatre stage.

The first theatrical performance took place in 1967 and, today, over 22 shows are produced annually in the theatre’s two auditoria.

The Bell Theatre has a proscenium arch and a hundred seats and the Prompt Corner is a studio theatre with fifty seats. In the basement is a private bar where stand-up comedy is performed monthly.

Plays produced include Shakespeare, comedy, pantomime, musicals, and cutting-edge drama. Contemporary writing is particularly encouraged, as are aspiring actors and directors.
