Bustling during the day but quiet at night, South Norwood residents are well-served by quality local housing, shops, transport and parks.
Living in South Norwood
South Norwood is in the London Borough of Croydon, and in common with West Norwood and Upper Norwood it is named after the Great North Wood.
To the east of South Norwood is the deeply impressive South Norwood Country Park which has a nature reserve, playing fields, tennis courts and pitch & putt.
It is also the location for Croydon Sports Arena, which consists of a football club and a full-size running track.
Crystal Palace Football Club plays at Selhurst Park which lies between the centre of South Norwood and Selhurst to the south west.
Property in South Norwood still offers very good value for money, especially in comparison with neighbouring Croydon.
At the top end, in areas such as South Norwood Hill, there are truly delightful semi-detached Victorian and Edwardian villas, with up to seven bedrooms, complemented by good-sized gardens and garages.
Closer to the centre of South Norwood you will find solid Edwardian houses with three or four bedrooms but in areas such as Lancaster Road the architecture is 'between wars' where casement hinged windows have replaced classic 19th century sash.
For those on the lower rungs of the property ladder there is a good choice of flats in South Norwood especially one-bedroom flats in Victorian conversions near the town centre.
Families thrive in South Norwood and young children have a choice of nine primary schools. For secondary education, children travel to neighbouring Upper Norwood, or to Selhurst, or Thornton Heath.
Transport
The railway station in South Norwood is Norwood Junction which offers commuters a choice of routes into London.
To the north west of South Norwood there are services to Crystal Palace, Clapham Junction, West Brompton and Watford Junction.
Other routes include services to London Bridge, Waterloo East and Charing Cross; and south to East Croydon and West Croydon stations.

History and culture
'The Adventure of the Norwood Builder' is solved by the brilliant detective, Sherlock Holmes, although which of the houses the Norwood builder is alleged to have built still remains a mystery!
The famous novelist and creator of Sherlock Holmes lived in South Norwood for three years and the area inspired him to write one of his best detective stories.
D.H. Lawrence taught for a short while at Davidson School before the First World War. Perhaps life in leafy South Norwood inspired him to write 'Women in Love' or the Lord Chamberlain's favourite, 'Lady Chatterley's Lover'?
Seven chimneys once dominated the landscape to the west of Norwood Junction but were demolished and the land is now a park called Brickfields Meadow.
South Norwood used to be known for its plethora of good pubs but only a few remain such as the Jolly Sailor and The Albert both, of which, are mentioned in the Good Pub Guide.
