It may be a cliché to describe New Eltham as a leafy commuter suburb on the edge of the Garden of England, but that is exactly what it is.
Living in New Eltham
New Eltham is located within the London Borough of Greenwich, although houses north of Footscray Road fall within the London Borough of Bexley.
Much of the area comprises solid, reasonably priced Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses complemented by 20th century semis and exciting new developments of houses and flats mostly built on old factory sites.
New Eltham was once a hamlet called Pope's Street, and when the railway station opened in 1878 it was named Pope Street. Over the years as housing spread southwards from Eltham, the station was eventually renamed New Eltham.
Wyborne Primary School on Footscray Road was built in 1904 and still has a sign on the main building that says Pope Street School. Today, there are five primary schools in New Eltham and five secondary schools in Eltham.
The crossroads around New Eltham station is the hub of the area and here you will find a library, post office, restaurants and shops.
For more serious shopping, Bromley to the south has major retailers such as Marks and Spencer, Next, BHS and Debenhams and the giant shopping mall of Bluewater is easily accessible in Greenhithe near Dartford.
Local sports clubs such as Footscray Rugby Union F.C. and New Park Football Club are spoilt for choice when it comes to local playing fields.
Charlton Athletic, the former Premiership club, also trains in New Eltham and cricket is popular thanks to the areas association with leather on willow legend, W.G. Grace.
Transport
New Eltham station is on a loop line from Dartford to Lewisham via Hither Green.
Served by Southeastern Trains there are connections to London Bridge, Cannon Street, Waterloo East, Charing Cross, and Victoria.
Lewisham station is the southern terminus of the Docklands Light Railway serving Greenwich, the Isle of Dogs, Canary Wharf and stations to Stratford.
The A20 Sidcup Road is a main artery into Central London via Lewisham and in the opposite direction to east Kent and Dover.

History and culture
In 1954, as part of the Cold War civil defence, a rectangular windowless blockhouse was built behind New Eltham library on Southwood Road. It served as the Woolwich Borough Control and when Woolwich merged with Greenwich in 1965 it took over the role as the Greenwich Borough Control.
New Eltham Operatic Society is a member of the National Operatic and Dramatic Association. The society organises regular social events and produces a major production each year in April and an Autumn Concert every September.
