This pocket of south-east London has a low profile, with the exception of its train station, whose large size and high frequency of services to London seem at odds with its sleepy location.
Living in Hither Green
You will find Hither Green tucked in between Lee and the noisier, more urban Lewisham and Catford. Hither Green is being hailed by some as the new East Dulwich.
Hither Green is divided into two distinct halves by the railway lines. The smarter side towards Manor House Gardens and Lee costs about 15 per cent more than the less pretty Catford side, although the housing stock is fairly similar.
However, the Catford side now has an alternative to the standard terraced houses: Meridian South, a major redevelopment at the former Hither Green hospital site on Hither Green Lane, provides plenty of contemporary apartments, as well as its own shopping area.
The area is popular with commuting professionals, with young families, and also with those who've settled down already. It has a thirty and forty-something demographic rather than a young, footloose and fancy-free profile. It feels less cosmopolitan than nearby Lewisham.
Local residents boast that Hither Green is lovely and quiet, and you can get a decent sized house there for the cost of a cupboard in Islington. It also only takes 13 minutes to travel by train to London Bridge.
Transport
Hither Green is a major resource for the local commuter, with frequent, direct connections to London Charing Cross, Victoria and Cannon Street.
Local buses connect to Lewisham Town Centre, Greenwich, and other local towns.
The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) is accessible from Lewisham station.
There are two designated London cycle network routes through Hither Green.

History and culture
Hither Green's origins lie along the medieval trade route of Hither Green Lane and its later growth as a Victorian suburb, following the construction of the South Eastern Railway in the 1860s.
The South Eastern Railway opened up Hither Green to residential development. By 1875 the first signs of suburban housing development were beginning to appear.
In 1896 Archibald Cameron Corbett, an MP and prolific builder, bought the 278 acres of North Park Farm and built almost 3,000 homes in Catford and Hither Green, on what is now known as the Corbett Estate.
Hither Green has a small but very pleasant park. Manor House Gardens, established in 1902, which has been restored with a pond, children's playground, café, tennis courts and a dog-free area thats great for picnics in the summer.
There's also an adjacent library, situated in the former Manor House itself. The original ice-house is occasionally open to the public on Sundays.
