Property, Houses and Flats for Sale in Dulwich, South East London

Dulwich is an oasis of green spaces and gentility, and yet is within easy reach of central London.

Living in Dulwich

Beside the Fountain crossroads in Dulwich village stands a milestone telling us that Whitehall is just over four miles away. But, despite being so close to Central London, Dulwich still has the aura and charm of a real English village and is considered to be the "green oasis" of South London.

Dulwich has a good selection of family homes, from the magnificent detached houses that run through the village from North Dulwich station to Dulwich College to the Victorian and Edwardian properties that dominate the village and its immediate surroundings.

A few delightful 'rose cottages' can be found discreetly tucked away in its heart, as can a number of idyllic 1920s/30s houses with their abundance of light and space. Many properties have been renovated and extended to create contemporary homes.

The leading schools in Dulwich are exceptional in reputation and excellence. Day pupils travel from all over London to attend the private schools, whilst boarders come from various parts of the world.

The ancient thoroughfare which separated the manors of Dulwich and Friern is now Lordship Lane, a haven of shops, both speciality and large chains, restaurants, bars and all manner of local amenities and businesses.

Newly restored to its original Victorian layout, Dulwich Park is a 72-acre stretch of land originally created from former farmland and meadows. Situated in the heart of the village, this popular park has numerous attractions, including a boating lake, duck pond and a bicycle hire company.

Transport

Trains take approximately 10 minutes from all local stations (North, West and East Dulwich stations) into London Bridge and/or Victoria.

The City Thameslink service, which calls at Herne Hill, operates throughout the day and night and provides easy access to Gatwick Airport and, via Central London to Luton Airport.

History and culture

The name Dilwihs (Dulwich), meaning "Marshy Meadow Where Dill Grows," was first recorded in AD 967. The manor of Dulwich was owned by Bermondsey Abbey from 1127 to 1538.

Edward Alleyn, an Elizabethan actor, bought the manor in 1605. He went on to found Dulwich College, which today is one of London's leading independent schools.

The College is still a major landowner and many of the properties in Dulwich are on long leases to the College. The College building can be seen by the roundabout in Dulwich Village.

Dulwich Picture Gallery is the oldest purpose-built art gallery in England, with a magnificent collection of paintings by artists such as Rembrandt, Rubens and Canaletto.

Opened in 1817 and built by Sir John Soane, the gallery has recently been refurbished and extended to include a café, shop and educational resource centre. A visit is highly recommended.

Originally constructed in 1789, London's last remaining Tollgate can be found in College Road. You can still see the first pricing policy displayed.
