Camberwell has fine Georgian architecture, and an arty and multi-cultural community.
Living in Camberwell
Camberwell is part of the Borough of Southwark and borders East Dulwich and Peckham.
It has a fast rail link to central London (Victoria and London Bridge) and its convenient location, combined with its open spaces, has resulted in it being a popular residential area.
The architecture in the area includes well-preserved Georgian terraces along Camberwell Grove and Grove Lane, although the majority of the housing stock consists of Victorian terraces and a large number of tower blocks.
Today, Camberwell is a flourishing multi-cultural community, famous for its carnivals, festivals and rich artistic character, attracting more residents to the area.
The hub of the neighbourhood is Camberwell Green, but with its fast traffic and nose-to-tail buses, it's not noticeably green.
Camberwell has central London and all its resources on its doorstep. Within easy reach, you will find all the museums, galleries, arts and entertainment that one of the world's greatest capital cities has to offer.
Transport
Camberwell itself has no rail station, although nearby Denmark Hill station operates overland links into Victoria and London Bridge.
In addition, the Oval and Elephant & Castle tube stations are within easy reach.
The large numbers of good bus routes into the city make Camberwell an ideal commutable district.

History and culture
It is thought that the name 'Camberwell' originates from the old name for a British well, 'Comberwell', mainly because the area was known for having a plentiful supply of wells in Grove Park.
Kings College Hospital first opened in 1840, moving to its present site at Denmark Hill in 1913. Today, Kings College is one of Londons largest and busiest teaching hospitals.
The Camberwell College of Arts has a distinguished tradition and has long been regarded as one of the country's leading art and design colleges. Famous students include filmmaker Mike Leigh and artist Damien Hurst.
Each summer at the end of June, the Camberwell Arts Festival celebrates the thriving cultural scene in SE5, with nine days of street parades, art exhibitions, film screenings and activities for all the family.
