Vibrant Borough is within walking distance of the City and is home to London's oldest food market.

Living in Borough

The varied area of Borough extends along the South Bank between Waterloo and Tower Bridge, and encompasses the Tate Modern, the National Theatre and City Hall.

Borough has plenty of warehouse conversions and apartment blocks, many of which have been built in the past 15 years. In contrast to Docklands, they tend to include a percentage of affordable housing.

Trinity Square is considered to be one of London's finest Georgian squares. It was closed to through traffic some years ago, making it a serenely tranquil setting in a vibrant and desirable area.

Merrick Square is another popular residential area with uniformly attractive Georgian houses. There are also developments of purpose-built flats and modern houses in Borough.

The area is well known for its good pubs - The Market Porter at Borough Market and The George Tavern off Borough High Street are good examples.

Borough is home to London's oldest food market, located close to the Thames behind Southwark Cathedral, and is open for business between 12 and 6pm on Friday and 9am to 4pm on Saturday.

Transport

Borough is located near to London Bridge Station which is well connected to the mainline National Rail network and the London Underground (Northern Line – City Branch).

There are also many Bus Routes serving the area.

History and culture

The Borough (of Southwark) is located by the river Thames. The village centre was around Borough High Street and was originally in the county of Surrey. The name Southwark may have meant 'southern defence work'.

Famously, in 1968 London Bridge was sold to an American entrepreneur. A popular urban legend is that he believed mistakenly that he was buying the more impressive Tower Bridge.

The current London Bridge was constructed from 1967 to 1972, and was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1973.
