Property, Houses and Flats for Sale in Oakwood, North London

On the northern fringes of Greater London, Oakwood stands tall amongst the capital’s leafy suburbs.

Living in Oakwood

Oakwood is at the southernmost tip of Enfield Chase in the London Borough of Enfield.

Bordered by the magnificent Trent Country Park to the north and, clockwise, by Grange Park, Winchmore Hill, Southgate, East Barnet and Cockfosters, Oakwood is the epitome of well-planned, leafy suburbia.

Named Oakwood in the 1920s after Oak Lodge, when developers expanded northwards from Southgate, the name remained off the map until the Piccadilly Line station was named Oakwood, 13 years after it first opened.

Much of the property in Oakwood was developed in the 1930s and is semi-detached with three or four bedrooms, a garage and a good-sized rear garden.

The closer the houses get to the glorious countryside of Trent Park the bigger the properties and the higher the prices. But if you are looking for a more competitively priced, detached, four-bedroom family home, there are good examples of contemporary properties near Oakwood Park.

Oakwood’s many Vales, Drives and Avenues are spacious, leafy and, almost without exception, enjoy off-street parking. Every road leads to one of six local parks that contribute so much to the quality of living in Oakwood.

To the west of Oakwood tube station is Southgate School, a massive comprehensive educating up to 1600 students. Adjacent to Saracens Rugby Football Club, is De Bohun Primary School, one of several primary schools in the area.

Oakwood residents also enjoy the benefits of good shops, bars, restaurants and sports clubs in neighbouring Southgate and Enfield Town and, on rainy days, their leisure centres.

Transport

Oakwood has the benefit of good links to central London by tube and train.

Oakwood tube station is on the Piccadilly Line, which provides a direct route to King’s Cross, Leicester Square and out to Heathrow Airport.

The railway stations at Enfield Chase, Grange Park and Winchmore Hill are served by First Capital Connect which provides a direct link to King’s Cross and to Moorgate Station in the City.

History and culture

To the west of Oakwood is the Chicken Shed Theatre Company. It was founded in 1974 in a disused chicken shed by Mary Ward and Jo Collins. The company produces theatrical and musical productions, performed by children of all backgrounds and abilities.

Across the British Isles, the company provides several theatre workshops known as ‘sheds’. The Chicken Shed has performed at a number of public events, including Queen Elizabeth II's golden jubilee celebrations in 2002.

A special show to commemorate 100 years of J. M. Barrie's children's story Peter Pan was staged by the theatre company at the Albery Theatre in London in 2004 to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

2004 also saw the release of The Chicken Shed Album, a compilation that marked the 30th anniversary of the theatre company. Contributors to the album included Cliff Richard and Emma Bunton.

In 2007 a show tunes album was released in aid of The Association of Children’s Hospices. For more information, visit http://www.chickenshed.org.uk/.
