Fashionable Islington: full of theatres, boutiques and also close to the City.
Living in Islington
Islington has long been favoured as one of the capital’s trendiest places to live, for its proximity to the Square Mile, the lovely Georgian squares and a lively social scene.
Until the 1980s, Islington experienced a period of decline; however, this changed as people realised the area offered both space and proximity to the City. The area is popular with young professionals and also families.
The area is renowned for its grand townhouses, garden squares and tree-lined streets. Gentrified Islington is awash with Georgian and Victorian houses. Flats can be found within its many period conversions.
Islington is now considered one of the most coveted regions of London by both residents and visitors alike. The diversity of the residents has demanded an eclectic variety of restaurants, nightlife and shops. Whether you want candlelit sophistication or organic delis, Islington has it all.
Upper Street is a focal point and is packed with shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants. Chapel Market, a lively street market, and the renowned specialist antique shops and stalls of nearby Camden Passage are also big draws.
From the heart of Islington it’s easy to explore other neighbourhoods. Canonbury is an enclave of elegant Georgian townhouses and quiet leafy squares, and is home to the Estorick Gallery, specialising in Italian art.
Hoxton and Shoreditch are nearby boroughs with an urban feel, and include the White Cube Gallery and a great choice of bars, clubs and restaurants.
Transport
There are two underground stations in the area: Highbury & Islington and Angel. Sited on the Victoria and Northern lines, they allow for fast access to central London.
Main line trains departing from Essex Road Station provide easy access to routes in and out of London.
By road, Islington is close to the North Circular, M1 and all routes north. The Congestion Zone covers the area south of City Road and Pentonville Road.
Efficient bus networks can take you to numerous points in the City and West End. For more detailed information on travelling around London and congestion charges visit www.tfl.gov.uk.
History and culture
Islington’s history is one of the oldest in London. A dormitory village on the fringe of the City from medieval times, its one specific function was as an overnight stop for cattle on their way to Smithfield.
Numerous famous names have lived in Islington. Samuel Phelps, who transformed Islington’s Sadler’s Wells theatre into a reputable theatre venue, lived in Canonbury Square, as did the writer Evelyn Waugh.
And as all Arsenal fans know, the futuristic new Emirates Stadium is in Highbury.
