Rich in wealth and greenery, Hampstead Garden Suburb is one of the finest examples of 20th Century domestic architecture.

Living in Hampstead Garden Suburb

Hampstead Garden Suburb is run by a trust that preserves the special qualities of this elite area of North London.

Founded by Henrietta Barnett in 1907, Hampstead Garden Suburb is about 7 miles from the centre of London and is home to 13,000 residents. It lies mostly to the south of the A1 Lyttelton Road, east of Kingsley Way, west of The Bishop’s Avenue and north of Hampstead Lane.

The 'Suburb' is renowned for its high quality housing stock, which includes terraces of houses and flats built in the 1920s. The area also features substantial, semi-detached houses, often mock-Tudor 1930s' detached houses with classic, rounded bay windows and magnificent mansions, most notably in The Bishop’s Avenue, that command many millions.

Property north of Lyttelton Road is mostly purpose-built bocks of apartments set in leafy streets and gardens.

Probably the greatest joy from living in Hampstead Garden Suburb is the abundance of expansive green land.

Lyttleton Playing Fields are at the heart of the 'Suburb', and Hampstead Golf Course and Hampstead Heath Extension mark the southern border. To the east lie the great greens and fairways of Highgate Golf Course and to the west is the Big Wood.

Hampstead Garden Suburb has a few local shops but there is plenty of shopping, entertainment and restaurants in neighbouring Golders Green and Hampstead.

Muswell Hill, which lies to the north-east of Hampstead Garden Suburb, offers a vast selection of shops, banks and major stores such as Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s.

History and culture

Kenwood House is a stately home on the corner of Hampstead Heath just to the south of Hampstead Lane. It is noted for its outdoor concerts on summer evenings, which are often enjoyed accompanied by Champagne and a picnic.

Neighbouring East Finchley has a lovely village atmosphere complemented by the Phoenix Cinema on the High Road – the oldest purpose-built picture house in the UK.

Prior to the start of World War II, refugees fleeing the Nazis arrived in the area followed by many more during and after the war. Today, residents in Hampstead Garden Suburb, Golders Green and Finchley enjoy an excellent quality of life complemented by a good selection of kosher shops and restaurants.
