Archway has much to offer, including excellent transport links and moderate house prices by comparison.

Living in Archway

Archway is in the London Borough of Islington and named after a prominent bridge constructed nearby.

In recent years, young professionals have been moving into Archway, attracted by its quality housing and transport and its proximity to Waterlow Park and Hampstead Heath.

Holloway Road links Archway to Highbury Corner and is always busy with traffic. Lining the pavements are the usual supermarket chains and a reasonable choice of restaurants, complemented by more shops and restaurants in neighbouring Islington and Camden Town.

Property in Archway ranges from good-sized Victorian townhouses, especially sought after around Whittington Park, to conversion flats and council properties.

In general, the most popular residential areas are west of the A400 Junction Road and east of the A1 Archway Road in what is known as the Whitehall conservation area. Here the streets are tantalisingly close to upmarket Highgate but are much more affordable.

What may be of particular interest to parents of young children considering moving to Archway is Yerbury Primary School near Whittington Park, as it is considered to be one of the best schools in London.

Another benefit to living in Archway is Whittington Hospital on Highgate Hill. Named in honour of the first Mayor of London, Richard (Dick) Whittington, early versions of the current hospital were built to help sufferers of leprosy and small pox.

Today the Whittington is a general hospital and a teaching hospital associated with University College Medical School. In the grounds is a statue of Dick Whittington’s cat!

Transport

Archway tube station is on the High Barnet branch of the Northern Line and connects to Euston, Charing Cross and Waterloo mainline stations.

Tufnell Park tube station is at the junction of Brecknock Road and Junction Road and is also on the Northern Line.

Holloway Road tube station, to the east of Tufnell Park in Lower Holloway, is on the Piccadilly Line.

Upper Holloway mainline station is near Whittington Park and is served by the London Overground. It is situated between Gospel Oakand Barking.

Archway is also well served with bus routes and, for car users, there are major roads heading in and out of the capital.

History and culture

It was in Archway that Dick Whittington is supposed to have heard the Bow Bells "calling" him back to London to become Lord Mayor.

The Archway Tavern is a noted music venue and was the location for the cover photo on ‘Muswell Hillbillies’, an album by the British pop group, The Kinks.

Notable residents of Archway include Arabella Weir, Alan Plater and, at one time, Rachel Whiteread, whose most famous work 'Ghost' is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC.

‘Ghost’ is a plaster cast of a room taken from the house at 486 Archway Road.
