An impressive ten percent of Newham is green space, enabling residents to enjoy a myriad of sports and leisure pursuits.
Living in Newham
In 1965, Newham was established as a borough and is an amalgamation of Manor Park, Forest Gate, Stratford, West Ham, Upton Park, East Ham, Plaistow, Beckton, Canning Town, Custom House, Silvertown and North Woolwich.
Newham lies about three miles from the City of London and encompasses much of East London’s regenerated docklands, including London City Airport and ExCeL Exhibition Centre.
Of course, Newham’s most impressive regeneration is the Olympic Park, currently being constructed in Stratford for the 2012 Olympic Games.
Adjacent to the Olympic Park is Stratford City, a stunning new development of 4,500 new homes, offices, hotels, schools and a shopping mall to which John Lewis, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer have already committed stores.
Newham is abuzz with many more exciting regeneration schemes in places such as Canning Town and West Ham, and there are more in the pipeline.
However, it’s people that make a borough and Newham has a young demographic representing almost all of the world’s cultures, including the traditional East End spirit of friendship and camaraderie whether born and bred a Londoner or a recent arrival.
Modest house prices, especially by comparison, good local amenities including the vast expanse of Wanstead Flats, and easy access to Canary Wharf, the City and London’s West End are encouraging many people to put down roots in Newham.
Transport
Several major roads pass through Newham including the A13 Newham Way and the A406 North Circular Road.
National Rail, the London Underground and Docklands Light Railway are all well represented in the borough, complemented by a comprehensive network of buses.

London City Airport lies to the south of Beckton on the River Thames and is easily accessible via the DLR. For information regarding flights please visit http://www.londoncityairport.com/.
History and culture
Green Street, near Upton Park, has been called 'the Bond Street of the East End' as it has over 400 independent shops representing cultures from around the world complemented by a myriad of cafés and restaurants.
East Ham Town Hall is a Grade II listed Edwardian building with a magnificent clock tower. Home to Newham Council, it was constructed in 1903 and opened by Passmore Edwards, a Victorian newspaper proprietor and philanthropist.
