Leyton has swept aside the horrors of post-war reconstruction and is enjoying the benefits of numerous regeneration projects.

Living in Leyton

Leyton is in the London Borough of Waltham Forest and is one of the most multi-cultural and vibrant areas of East London.

Described by Daniel Defoe as the 'town on the River Ley' where rich people live, Leyton has had its ups and downs. Bombing during the Blitz was followed by many years of decline, but Leyton's regeneration is well under way.

Unappealing high rise estates from the 1960s have been demolished and replaced by attractive and sought-after new housing developments complemented by substantial Victorian houses with five or six bedrooms and traditional terraces of three-bedroom Victorian and Edwardian houses.

Leyton has two principal shopping areas located at each end of the High Road where you will find Woolworths and Tesco, numerous pubs and bars and Leyton Orient Football Club.

Spitalfields Market relocated to Leyton in 1991 and is the UK's leading horticultural market specialising in exotic fruit and vegetables.

Leyton Leisure Lagoon has a gym, sauna, sun beds and a swimming pool with 'women only' sessions to enable those of various religious beliefs to enjoy a swim supervised by female lifeguards.

There are at least 16 primary and secondary schools in the immediate Leyton area, including Christian and Islamic faith schools.

A major development on Leyton's doorstep is Stratford City, a multi-billion pound scheme to regenerate a 73-hectare former railway site.

The plans include a vast shopping mall to which John Lewis, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer have committed stores, plus 5,000 new homes, schools, offices and public spaces.

Leyton is home to Leyton Orient F.C. which plays in Division One of the Football League and has its home ground on Brisbane Road.

Of course, there is a bigger sporting event affecting Leyton than soccer. The 2012 Olympic Park lies to the west of Leyton and includes the Olympic Stadium, Aquatics Centre, and London Velopark.
