Formerly the southern gateway to Epping Forest, Forest Gate is a residential area of predominantly Victorian villas, Edwardian terraced houses and semi-detached 1930s' properties.
Woodgrange Estate is a sought-after conservation area of double and triple-fronted Victorian villas which lies east of Woodgrange Road in Hampton Road, Osborne Road, Claremont Road and Windsor Road.

History and culture
Jimi Hendrix in 1966 wrote his classic song 'Purple Haze' in the Upper Cut Club in Woodgrange Road, Forest Gate.
Ronnie Lane (1946 – 1997), a member of the pop group the Small Faces, spent his childhood in Forest Gate at 385 Romford Road. Fellow band members Steve Marriott and Jimmy Winston lived in neighbouring Manor Park.
