St James's is an aristocratic residential area overlooking two beautiful parks.

Living in St James's

The exclusive enclave of St James's is separated from the rest of London by Piccadilly, to the north, Haymarket to the east, and by two of London's prettiest parks.

St James's Park lies due south of The Mall, a straight, majestic road that leads from Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace. Green Park is on the northern side of Constitution Hill, to the west of St James's.

For generations, St James's has been prime real estate for the rich and powerful. It is a small area steeped in historic residences such as St. James's Palace, Clarence House, Marlborough House, Lancaster House and Spencer House.

Residential property for sale in St James's is rarely a whole house but usually a grand apartment in a Georgian or Victorian mansion block, often with a panoramic view of Green Park or St James's Park.

At street level, St James's is known for its upmarket retail outlets such as Fortnum & Mason and Alfred Dunhill. In the spaces above the shops are many residential flats.

Christie's auction house in King Street is one of St James's star attractions, complemented by prestigious art and antique dealerships, gentlemen's clubs and some very fine restaurants.

To the north-east of St James's is Piccadilly Circus, the gateway to London's West End with its numerous museums, art galleries, theatres, cinemas and restaurants.

Hamley's, the world-famous toy store, is north of Piccadilly Circus on Regent Street and on Oxford Street are many shops and department stores.

Transport

The black cab is the transport of choice for many residents of St. James's, although areas such as Mayfair are within easy reach on foot.

Green Park tube station lies on Piccadilly and is served by the Piccadilly Line, providing a direct route to Heathrow Airport via Knightsbridge.

Green Park is also served by the Victoria Line, which links to Victoria and to King's Cross St Pancras railway stations; and by the Jubilee Line which connects to Canary Wharf via Westminster and Waterloo.

History and culture

The Ritz Hotel is on Piccadilly and first opened its doors in 1906. 'Tea at the Ritz' in the hotel's opulent Palm Court is so popular that booking weeks in advance is essential. For further information please visit http://www.theritzlondon.com/

Almost opposite The Ritz, on the north side of Piccadilly, is The Royal Academy of Arts, renowned for hosting numerous exhibitions including its famous 'Summer Exhibition'. For information regarding exhibitions please click http://www.royalacademy.org.uk/

Two of London's most famous theatres are in the Haymarket, just a gentle stroll from the heart of St James's. The Theatre Royal Haymarket has one of the grandest entrances in London and Her Majesty's Theatre is home to Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, 'The Phantom of the Opera'.
