Immortalised in the comedy film 'Passport to Pimlico', the home of Sir Winston Churchill has become one of London's most sought-after areas.

Living in Pimlico

Pimlico suffered post-war decline until the arrival of the Victoria Line in 1972 saw it change from a residential outpost to a worthy member of the SW1 club.

Pimlico lies due south of Warwick Way and Victoria and north of Grosvenor Road, which runs along the River Thames.

Property in Pimlico is a mix of grand Georgian and Victorian terraced houses, often with pillared porticoes, purpose-built mansion flats, and flats and maisonettes above commercial premises.

In the heart of Pimlico is a highly desirable residential area between Belgrave Road, Westmoreland Terrace, Lupus Street and Eccleston Square. The area is largely populated by handsome Victorian houses, most of which were designed by architect and builder Thomas Cubitt.

In recent years, Pimlico has seen much new building, especially in the streets leading to the River Thames, complementing post-war public housing schemes in Dolphin Square and in and around Churchill Gardens.

Pimlico has numerous restaurants, cafés and bars and the area is well-served by newsagents, supermarkets, boutiques, niche shops, and a daily market in Artillery Place.

A short hop from Pimlico is Sloane Square, home to Peter Jones the department store and to the Royal Court Theatre. West of the square is King's Road, resplendent with shops, restaurants, farmers' and antique markets, cinemas, and Marks & Spencer.

Transport

Pimlico tube station is on the Victoria Line, one stop away from Victoria tube station, to the north of Pimlico, and with Vauxhall to the south.

Victoria tube station is on the Victoria, Circle and District lines and above the tube station is Victoria bus terminus and Victoria railway station.

A few minutes' walk from Victoria tube station, along Buckingham Palace Road, is Victoria Coach Station.

History and culture

A few minutes' walk from Pimlico tube station, to the east of Vauxhall Bridge Road, is Tate Britain, formerly the Tate Gallery.

Next door to Tate Britain is Chelsea College of Art and Design, which has recently moved into the stunning premises of the former Royal Army Medical College.

The Apollo Victoria Theatre and the Victoria Palace Theatre are both highly regarded for their musicals and are very near Victoria Station.

The Chelsea Flower Show is held annually in the grounds of the Royal Hospital near Sloane Square. For information please visit http://www.rhs.org.uk/chelsea/index.html.
