The River Calder runs through the centre of Todmorden and was the historic border between Lancashire and Yorkshire. In 1989, the border was moved west and Todmorden now lies entirely within West Yorkshire. In the first half of the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution saw the building of many large mills and the construction of the Rochdale Canal and the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. The latter involved boring Summit Tunnel which is over 1.6 miles long and was once the longest in the world. In recent years, Todmorden has benefited from a great deal of regeneration and is now a popular commuter town for people working in Manchester, Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield.
