Neighbouring areas

Welwyn should not be confused with Welwyn Garden City, which is a large town on the south-east side of the A1(M) that was developed in 1920. Welwyn is a charming village and is the site of both Iron Age and Roman settlements. The remains of Roman Baths are preserved in a steel vault near to junction 6 of the A1(M). In the 17th century, Welwyn became an important staging post on the Great North Road, and a number of coaching inns remain as pubs.
